Evangelical church in Rimavská Baňa

The single-nave Romanesque-Gothic building with the polygonal termination of the presbytery and the present tower dates from around 1300. In 1415, it was expanded under Stibor of Stiborice, and the paving in its interior was also increased. In this period, the building was supplemented with a portal to a simple sacristy with a square floor plan and a fresco painting of the sanctuary. Around 1500, it was expanded again - the capacity of the church was increased by extending the nave to the west, the windows were also changed. The wall paintings on the southern facade of the nave probably also date from this period. Since the end of the 16th century, the church has served the Evangelicals, who modified the interior of the church. It was mainly about the construction of a wooden tribune-empora near the western (in 1670) and later also the southern and northern walls (in 1726). In the second half of the 17th century, the exterior facades also received a Renaissance treatment, in the form of corner squaring. In 1783, a wooden coffered ceiling was made. In the same year, the silhouette of the church also changed significantly, when a bell tower was added to the presbytery from the eastern side. The building acquired its present appearance during the reconstruction in 1906, when the tower received a new helmet.

In the interior, on the northern side of the nave, an extensive depiction of the Ladislav legend from 1370 has been preserved. Below it, there are three (apparently votive) paintings, partially hidden behind the tribune. It is a saint with royal insignia, which experts describe as St. Ľudovit, St. Ladislav or St. Imrich. The side image represents Saint Elizabeth of Hungary or Saint Helena.

In the presbytery we can find scenes of the Last Judgment and relatively well-preserved frescoes of St. Barbara and St. George wrestling with a dragon. The paintings were discovered only in the 1950s.

In addition to the tribune, the carved wooden choir bench from 1695, the altar from 1745 and the pulpit, which is two years younger, date from the Baroque period.
