Watchtower in Rožňava

The dominant feature of the historical center of the city of Rožňava is the late Renaissance watch tower, built in the years 1643-1654, i.e. in the period when the country was threatened by the Turks and it performed an important defensive function. The Turkish cannon ball, which can still be seen in its southern facade, testifies to the fact that it also experienced really rough moments. Near the cannon ball, there is a Renaissance stone tablet from the time the tower was built with the contemporary form of the city´s coat of arms. The historical interest of the tower also includes the fact that it had – as was widely known – the most accurate clock in all of Hungary. The 36.5 m high tower, modified several times, performed an important guard function. The tower also has a rich history. From its pavilion, visitors have a beautiful view of all the monuments of the historical core of Rožňava, the calvary, the entire town and the Rožňava Basin. Thanks to this attraction, Rožňava has its slogan: TOWN WITH A VIEW
