Chyžné, Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary

The church was built in the second half of the 13th century as a single nave with a square presbytery and an attached sacristy. Later, a separate standing wooden bell tower was added to it. In the 14th century, the interior was decorated with valuable frescoes, of which those in the presbytery have been preserved to this day. They depict the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, the birth of Jesus and the prostration of the three kings. Figures of the apostles, St. Helena, St. Catherine and St. Barbara, Christ the Suffering and Christ in the Mandorla. The paintings are decorative circular medallions with male heads that are unique in Slovakia and can be found in the territory of the former Hungary only in the church in the Hungarian town of Keszthely. In 1508, a rare late-Gothic wing altar from the workshop of Master Pavol from Levoča was added, while the statues of the angel and Mary are undoubtedly the work of Master Pavol himself. A wooden emporium decorated with painted plant ornaments and an equally decorated coffered ceiling date from 1745. Next to the church stands a wooden log bell tower from the 18th century.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Chyžné is one of the most complex examples of Gothic art, as it combines 13th century architecture with 14th century wall paintings and a carved wing altar from the early 16th century.
