Drienčany

The village is mainly known thanks to the writer, storyteller and folklorist Pavol Emanuel Dobšinský. He lived and worked here for almost 24 years. His final resting place is in the church grounds, near the memorial parsonage, which today houses the Museum of Slovak Fairy Tales. You can get here via a covered wooden staircase, the so-called házik located to the left of the crossroads under the church.

The Evangelical church on the hill is surrounded by a wall with bullet holes. Its interior is decorated with a wooden coffered ceiling and a pulpit with acanthus ornamentation. A beautiful Renaissance bell tower from the 17th century is part of the church grounds. At the crossroads below the church there is a monument depicting the work of Pavel Dobšinský with his bust and the symbols of a golden pen, a golden horseshoe and a golden hair. The fairy-tale village with approximately 200 inhabitants is decorated with many wooden figures. A wooden statue of Princess Milica greets you upon arrival, in the center the original bus stop is supported by a wooden statue of a hag with its hump.

Every summer in the middle of July, not only the streets but also the courtyards of Drienčany are filled with visitors. In the spirit of a fairy tale, the festival of handicrafts, gastronomy and folk culture "Dedina ožíva" takes place here.

The main part of the educational trail also leads through the village. It starts near Teplý Vrch and leads through the hickory grove along the shore of the water reservoir to the village of Driečnany, where its 2.9 km long circular section begins. It is interesting for both adults and children. It will take you behind tall ferns, to the Drienčany caves, deep sinkholes and karst lakes. At its end, a large sundial with fairy-tale characters, a wooden fairy-tale labyrinth, a bowling alley and a gazebo await the visitor, which will provide relaxation after the hike. You will also enjoy a nice view of the village and its surroundings with the warmest water reservoir in Slovakia - Teplý Vrch.Drienčany karst
