Jelšava old castle

Deeper in the forests of the Revúcká Highlands, only parts of this smaller aristocratic residence are hidden. It was built in the 1930s. The castle became the center of the Jelšava estate and the seat of the owners of the Ratold family from Jelšava. It experienced its greatest glory in the last third of the 14th century, when it was owned by Leustach of Jelšava. The source of Leustachs wealth, as well as the rise of his career at the royal court, were iron ore deposits.

During the reign of King Sigismund, the towns of Jelšava and Debrecen were centers of domestic trade in Hungary, which increased the importance of Jelšava Castle. However, he was not destined to become a majestic castle around Revúca. He lost fame and use with the gradual relocation of the nobility to the cities. With the increasing importance of Mur᧠Castle, Jelšavský Castle began to decline.

Not much of the castle has been preserved. The most visible is the floor plan in the form of a stone subsoil. As it once looked and many other information will be revealed by the educational panel directly on the castle.

You can walk to the castle directly from the Jelšava City Museum, following the tourist sign, in about 70 minutes. The reward for the final steeper ascent will also be nice views of the town of Jelšava.
