Tisovec

The picturesque town of Tisovec is located in the northern part of the Rimavská valley in the embrace of majestic mountains, at the crossroads of Rimavská Sobota, Brezno and Muráň.

The name of the town comes from the yew tree (taxus baccata), which was abundant here in the past. The oldest evidence of the settlement of the locality are archeological finds on the Hradová hill from the period 1000 - 400 BC. The first known written mention of Tisovec is from 1334.

Such personalities as Pavol Jozeffy, Štefan Marko Daxner, August Horislav Škultéty, Matej Hrebenda, Terézia Vansová, Dr. Samo Daxner, Dr. Vladimír Clementis, but also academic painter Rudolf Krivoš, Marián Lapšanský, Elena Vacvalová, Ján Valentík and others. Thanks to them, education and culture developed here, which contributed to the establishment of amateur theater, singing school, wind music and a Slovak library.

A tourist attraction is the cog railway, which leads from Tisovec to Pohronská Polhora. It is the only one of its kind in Central Europe.

Tisovec is part of the Gothic Way tourist route leading from Spiš to Gemer-Malohont and at the same time an ideal place to spend pleasant days in the surrounding beautiful nature.

Suitable hiking trails are offered by the Nature Trails to Hradová and Tŕstie, the trails "Behind the scents of Scented with a Flavor of History", or to the source of Rimava or the Devil's Valley.
